Problem Description

Using any form of RSP switching (optimum/flow/cef) on any type of Ethernet interface (10 Mbit/100 Mbit/Gigabit) can cause packet errors in the MAC address fields of packets that are input from any interface sharing the same MEMD packet free pools as that Ethernet interface.

Background

The problem was introduced through the initial TR-ISL feature commit which is tracked by CSCdj89868 (registered customers only) .

Problem Symptoms

Packets will end up with an incorrect MAC header and therefore will not correctly reach their destination.

This problem can show up with a good mixture of non-turbo switched traffic and turbo switching, dependent on the interfaces sharing the same memory (MEMD). In the case of LLC traffic the DMAC errors can result in an abrupt session disconnect, because of a session timeout. In most cases, it might result in a higher layer dropping packets or/and triggering a retransmission.

Workaround/Solution

This defect has Cisco bug ID CSCdm23824 (registered customers only) .

Below are workarounds, that are not recommended for all networks, that can be used until an image with the solution integrated is installed and integrated.

Workaround -There are two tested Workarounds

Note: This is not recommended for most networks.

Note: Disable all forms of RSP turbo switching by configuring the no ip route-cache command on all interfaces.

Note: This is not recommended for most networks.

Note: Or, disable caching of MEMD using the test rsp cache memd uncached exec command, or by using the memory cache-policy io uncached configuration command.

Not Recommended: Turning off any form of RSP Turbo switching may cause the router to over utilize the CPU since the system will be forced to process switch.
