Introduction

This document explains how to configure the switches for statistics collection with Cisco WAN Manager.

Prerequisites

Requirements

There are no specific requirements for this document.

Components Used

The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:

  • WAN Manager 11.0

  • WAN Manager 10.5

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Basic Configuration

Time Setup

Statistics collection is time-based, relative to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). You must synchronize every switch in the WAN cloud on the same GMT. The time zones can differ, but they must be relative to GMT. This rule also applies to the WAN Manager servers. Set up the time in this way:

On a Solaris Workstation

Set up the time at the Solaris install time. Or issue the date command.

On a Switch That Runs Switch Software

Complete these steps:

  1. In order to set the date and time to the GMT, issue the cnfdate command.

  2. In order to set your time zone, issue the cnftmzn command.

cnfdate year month day hour minute second

      cnftmzn time_zone

(time zones are: EST, EDT, ... PST, PDT, or ...G-2, G-1, GMT, G+1, ...)

On a Cisco MGX 8220

Complete these steps:

  1. In order to set the time zone, issue the cnftmzn command.

Note: The time zone for GMT is 1.

  2. In order to set the date, issue the cnfdate command.

  3. In order to set the GMT time, issue the cnftime command.

  4. In order to set the time zone relative to GMT, issue the cnftmzngmt command.

    cnftmzn time_zone
     (TimeZone 1:GMT 2:EST 3:CST 4:MST 5:PST)
    cnfdate mm/dd/yyyy

    cnftime hh:mm:ss

    cnftmzngmt time_offset_GMT

    dspcds

!--- The dspcds command shows you the time.

On an MGX 8250 or 8850 Version 1

The procedure is the same as the MGX 8220 procedure.

On an MGX 8xxx Version 2

The procedure is the same as the MGX 8220 procedure. Issue the dspdate command in order to see the time.

IP Connectivity

You can achieve the statistics collection from WAN Manager through:

  • TFTP—For Cisco BPX, Cisco IGX, Cisco Axis, and MGX version 1

  • FTP—For MGX version 2 and later

The file transfer is between the WAN Manager and the in-band network address of the switch. This address is either the network IP (NWIP) address or the ATM internal address. However, with version 10.4 and later, you can select in-band or out-of-band collection. If you select out-of-band, the file transfer occurs against the LAN interface IP address of the switch. On that path, no router or firewall can filter TFTP and FTP traffic. In order to set up the IP addresses, issue these commands:

  • On a switch that runs switch software—cnfnwip and cnflan

  • On an MGX 8220—cnfifip

  • On an MGX 8250 or 8850 version 1—cnfifip

  • On an MGX 8850 version 2 and later—cnfipif

Configure the Statistics Master

Even if all Cisco WAN Manager stations that manage one network can collect statistics data from the switch, only one of those stations can enable statistics collection on the switches. That workstation is called the Statistics Master. In order to set up the Statistics Master host IP address on a switch, issue these commands:

  • With switch software—cnfstatmast ip_address_of_the _statistics_master

  • On MGXs—cnfstatsmgr ip_address_of_the _statistics_master

Note: You can use the WAN Manager Gateway feature in versions 10.x and later. The feature forwards any enable requests from a regular WAN Manager server to the Statistics Master host that belongs to the gateway domain.

SNMP Configuration

Before WAN Manager performs the stats enable operation on the switches, WAN Manager does a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) query to check the Statistics Master setup on those switches. Therefore, you must configure SNMP strings. On switch software platforms as well as MGX version 2.0 and later, use the cnfsnmp command. Keep the defaults on the MGX 8220 and MGX 8250/8850 version 1. If there is any change when you issue the cnfsnmp command, make sure that the WAN Manager database reflects the change.
