Introduction

This document helps you to boot a Cisco Content Services Switch (CSS) 11000, 11500, or 11800 series content services switch from the Offline Diagnostic Monitor menu (Offline DM menu) and upgrade CSS software. This document also shows you how to set the CSS in order to use File Transfer Protocol (FTP) from a PC in order to copy a new version of CSS software through the management port.

Prerequisites

Requirements

Before you proceed, set up a an FTP service of your choice on a PC or a UNIX system with a network interface that connects to a CSS 11000 management port.

Components Used

This document covers CSS 11000 hardware which includes CSS 11500 and 11800 platforms. When CSS 11000 is mentioned, it applies to CSS 11050, 11150, 11500, and 11800 platforms, unless stated otherwise.

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Copy New CSS Software from the FTP Server to the CSS 11000

Before you boot a CSS 11000 past the Offline DM menu and download a new version of CSS software, connect an FTP server to a management interface. Connect a crossover cable between your PC Ethernet port and the CSS 11000 management interface, and then set the parameters on the CSS 11000. Also, connect a PC serial port to the console of the CSS.

  1. Place the Arrowpoint Distribution Image (ADI) in the default directory of the FTP server, either in .adi or .gz format.

  2. Connect the PC Ethernet to the management port with the use of a crossover cable. Connect the PC serial port to the CSS console port.

  3. In order to verify which IP address is assigned to the management port, select Show Boot Configuration in the Offline DM.

If necessary, change the IP address and mask to an IP address and mask that is on the same subnet as the PC or UNIX system. In order to make this change, select Set Boot Configuration -> Set IP Address, and Subnet Mask. The management port subnet must not be a configured circuit subnet in the CSS configuration. Return to the main menu.

  4. From the Offline DM, in order to verify that three or fewer CSS software versions exist on the CSS 11000 platforms fitted with hard disks, select Advanced Options -> Delete a Software Version from the main menu.

For CSS 11000 platforms fitted with a Flash disk, verify that only one version of software is installed. If four (two for flash disk CSS) software versions exist on the CSS 11000, delete one. Issue the command show installed-software version-limit on a CSS in order to check the maximum number of installed images allowed. Return to the main menu.

  5. In order to set the CSS 11000 to boot via FTP, select Set Boot Configuration -> Set Primary Boot Configuration.

  6. Point the CSS 11000 to the FTP server.

    1. At the Configuring PRIMARY Boot Record prompt, boot through the FTP:

      • N]etwork, [F]TP, [D]isk, or [C]lear: [D] F

      • If you reach the maximum number of installed images, then the selection of F results in this error message: Too many installed versions to FTP boot. Repeat step 5 if this happens.

    2. Enter the boot image filename: [ap0500403] ap05XXXXX.adi or ap05XXXXX.adi.gz (sg07XXXXX.adi or sg07XXXXX.adi.gz for CSS 11500 platforms).

    3. Enter the IP address of the FTP server: [0.0.0.0] X.X.X.X

    4. Enter the authentication username of the FTP server: [] user

    5. Enter the authentication password of the FTP server: [] pwd

    6. Type Y in order to boot from disk after download: y/n [y] Y

    7. Press Enter in order to continue.

    8. Return to the Offline DM main menu.

  7. In order to reboot the CSS 11000, select Reboot System and type Y at the prompt.

The CSS 11000 attempts to reboot from the FTP server. After the file downloads, the CSS 11000 uncompresses and/or unpacks the CSS software. This depends on what type of file is on the FTP server.

These are examples of boot sequences of 11000 (1105x and 1115x), 11500, and 11800 platforms. These begin with the initial message displayed by the CSS when it boots, and ends at the moment user intervention is required to enter the Offline DM.
