  • CableLabs standards-based Ethernet service over DOCSIS: Offer Ethernet in more places using your existing DOCSIS plant.
  • Customer premises equipment (CPE)–based Ethernet over DOCSIS: Quickly launch Carrier Ethernet services at the customer premises.
  • Business cable voice and multimedia communications: Offer triple-play services and extend voice services to business customers.

Deliver Ethernet over Your Existing Cable Plant
Cisco offers a complete portfolio of CableLabs standards-based Ethernet solutions for personalized, ubiquitous services. With minimal investment, you can increase your customer base with Ethernet delivered over your existing cable plant.

These solutions use:

  • Cisco uBR10012 Universal Broadband Routers for access
  • Cisco Model DPC2100 Cable Modems as the CPE
  • Cisco 7600 Series Routers for aggregation

The Cisco uBR10012 cable modem termination system (CMTS) connects all the cable modems and performs 802.1Q encapsulation of Layer 2 VPN traffic.

Use CPE to Connect to the Ethernet
The DPC2100 cable modem resides at the customer premises. It provides the Ethernet network connection through the uBR10012 CMTS (1 and 2 in the figure) from sites A and B. The Cisco 7609 Router typically bridges 802.1Q trunks coming from various Layer 2 modems, as well as fiber-based links.

Point-to-Point Cable Model-Based Ethernet Service over DOCSIS

Cisco also offers Carrier Ethernet-based service management using the Cisco ME 3400E Series Ethernet Access Switches. This platform provides both you and your business customers Metro Ethernet Forum service management, and operation, administration, and maintenance capabilities.
