Scientific Atlanta's next-generation MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) high-definition (HD) and standard-definition (SD) encoders add the latest compression technology to the resources available to cable, satellite and telco video operators, broadcasters, and service providers. These AVC encoders provide bandwidth maximization technology to support advanced services, and accelerate customers' ability to launch new or expanded customer-driven services such as HD and VOD.

To achieve the best possible high-definition (HD) and standard-definition (SD) video quality, the encoders employ extensive pre-analysis, truly full intra/inter search and advanced rate control. These encoders deliver up to 50 percent improvement in bandwidth savings compared with previously deployed MPEG-4 AVC encoders and support optional closed-loop statistical multiplexing to allow encoders in a multiplex pool to dynamically share and allocate bandwidth where it is most needed at a given moment.

The performance advantages can be expanded by a software-driven design that allows for rapid feature enhancements through software up-grades of new DSP/FPGA code.
