Virtual Private LAN Service

Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) is a technology that allows Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks to offer Layer 2 Ethernet services. It provides multipoint Ethernet service, while other technologies, such as Ethernet over MPLS (EoMPLS), are point-to-point services. VPLS emulates a virtual IEEE Ethernet bridge network.

Cisco Catalyst 6500 VPLS solutions for Data Center Interconnect offer:

  • Standards-based design
  • Simplified redundancy and subsecond convergence, when deployed with Cisco Catalyst 6500 Virtual Switching System {VSS) technology

The following modules support VPLS:

Advanced Virtual Private LAN Service

An enhancement to the standards-based VPLS solution, Advanced VPLS (A-VPLS) adds:

  • Enhanced traffic load-balancing capabilities
  • VPLS configuration simplifications
  • Improved availability

A-VPLS extends VLANs across data centers over an IP or MPLS core network. It provides a simplified provisioning model for enterprise customers, preserving interoperability with standard VPLS.

The following modules support A-VPLS:
