Cell-Site Access Platform Custom-Designed for Optimization of Radio Access Networks

The Cisco MWR 1941-DC-A Mobile Wireless Edge Router is a new cell-site access platform specifically designed to optimize, aggregate, and transport mixed-generation radio access networks (RANs) and cell-site operations traffic. It allows mobile wireless operators to significantly lower existing operating expenses, more cost-efficiently deploy new radio technologies such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (UMTS/HSDPA) voice and data networks, generate revenue from new cell-site IP-based services, and enable rapid deployment of next-generation mobile services.

The Cisco MWR 1941-DC-A enables a variety of RAN solutions by extending cell-site IP connectivity to Global System for Mobile Communications/General Packet Radio System/Enhanced Data for Global Evolution (GSM/GPRS/EDGE) base transceiver stations (BTSs) and UMTS/HSDPA NodeB equipment, and other telemetry and ancillary cell-site equipment. It efficiently transports cell-site voice, data, and signaling traffic over IP via traditional T1 and E1 physical connections, including leased line, microwave, and satellite, as well as alternative backhaul options, including DSL, IEEE 802.16, and metro Ethernet. It also supports standards-based Internet protocols over the RAN backhaul network, including those standardized at the Third-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for IP RAN transport. The primary Cisco RAN Optimization solutions, which may be deployed separately or in combination to suit the operator’s specific network and business needs, include:

  • Optimized RAN transport over IP—Aggregate and transparently transport mixed-generation (2G, 3G, 4G) digital voice and data calls over the existing RAN backhaul network via IP. Optimize over the backhaul network to reduce the amount of backhaul bandwidth consumed by as much as 50 percent and often much more, thereby reducing existing backhaul transmission costs and enabling more cost-efficient deployment of new RAN technologies. The backhaul network is typically the largest operational expense in the mobile operator’s network
  • Alternative RAN backhaul—The IP-enabled RAN allows for a variety of backhaul transport media enabling higher-capacity and lower-cost alternative RAN transport networks, such as DSL, IEEE 802.16, and metro Ethernet. Higher-speed broadband backhaul such as DSL and metro Ethernet is ideally suited for transport of HSDPA data traffic.
  • Cell-site operations support networks—The IP-enabled RAN backhaul network enables support for IP-based telemetry devices and other ancillary equipment at the cell site for remote operations and network element management of the cell-site equipment. This helps to reduce costly truck rolls and improve operational efficiency.
  • Cell-site IP points of presence (POPs)—Using the IP-enabled RAN backhaul, the operator can offer new revenue-generating IP services and applications at every cell site.
