The Cisco 1400 series asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) business class routers, a key element of the Cisco end-to-end DSL solution, offers always-on, high-speed Internet and corporate LAN access for business customers. Thanks to the power of Cisco IOSĀ®, the Cisco 1400 series also provides enhanced security with Cisco IOS Firewall, ATM and IP quality-of-service (QoS), extensive multimedia capabilities, as well as ease-of-use and management capabilities. The Cisco 1400 series enables service providers to decrease their deployment and operational costs and it enables service providers and resellers to offer revenue-generating, value-added services such as managed network services, managed security services, and virtual private networks (VPNs).

The Cisco 1401 ATM25 WAN router has an ATME25 interface, which connects to an external DSL modem (for example the Cisco 627) with an ATM25 interface, and provides an external demarcation point, as required by incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs) and competitors.
