® announces the end of life of the Cisco
® 4006 Switch, Cisco Catalyst 4000 Supervisor Engine II, and associated hardware and bundles. The last day to order the Cisco Catalyst 4006 and Catalyst 4000 Supervisor Engine II is May 3, 2005. Customers will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) until May 3, 2010. Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates for the Cisco Catalyst 4006 and Catalyst 4000 Supervisor Engine II. The Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine IV and Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine II-Plus are not being discontinued, but the Cisco Catalyst 4006 with Supervisor Engine II-Plus and Supervisor Engine IV bundles are included in this announcement.
Customers are encouraged to migrate to the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series and Cisco IOS
® based supervisor engines. The Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series with Cisco IOS supervisor engines are designed for optimal control of converged networks. Cisco IOS based supervisor engines include the Cisco Catalyst 4500 supervisor engines V, IV, and II-Plus. The Supervisor Engine V provides 96 Gbps of nonblocking L2/3/4 performance at 72mpps. The Catalyst 4500 chassis options include a Cisco Catalyst 4503, Cisco Catalyst 4506, Cisco Catalyst 4507R (redundant supervisor engine) and Cisco Catalyst 4510R (redundant supervisor engine) switches. Information about the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series switches is at:
Tables 1 and 2 provide relevant information for migrating from the Cisco Catalyst 4006 and Catalyst 4000 Supervisor Engine II to the Catalyst 4500 Series with Cisco IOS supervisor engines.

CISCO CATALYST 4000 SUPERVISOR ENGINE II MIGRATION OPTIONS
The recommended replacement for the Cisco Catalyst 4000 Supervisor Engine II is the Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine V, IV, or II-Plus.
• Cisco Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine V (WS-X4516) (New)-Offers port scalability (required for Cisco Catalyst 4510R) for resilient wire-speed Layer 2/3/4 switching and routing for high-end Enterprise wiring closets, layer 3 distribution points and large Enterprise branch office deployments (NetFlow option).
• Cisco Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine IV (WS-X4515)-Offers resilient wire-speed Layers 2/3/4 switching and routing for Enterprise wiring closets, layer 3 distribution points and medium Enterprise branch office deployments. (NetFlow option)
• Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series Supervisor Engine II-Plus (WS-X4013+)-Offers entry-level resilient Layer 2 switching with basic Layer 3 services for medium enterprise wiring closets and small enterprise branch office deployments. Aggressive new pricing makes it more affordable than ever for small and medium-sized customers to use Gigabit Ethernet and intelligent services for modular wiring closet connectivity at the network edge.
Differences between the Supervisor II and strategic Catalyst 4500 Series Supervisors are outlined here:
The recommended replacement for the Cisco Catalyst 4006 is the Cisco Catalyst 4506, 4507R, or 4510R chassis. The Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series chassis are optimized for Power over Ethernet (PoE). Every Cisco Catalyst 4500, when properly equipped, can provide 15.4W of power per port simultaneously in a fully loaded system while maintaining power supply redundancy. This allows customers to smoothly connect any IEEE 802.3af compliant device on any Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series 802.3af PoE line card port without concern for power.
Differences between the Cisco Catalyst 4006 chassis and the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series chassis are outlined at:
Customers can use the Cisco Technology Migration Plan (TMP) to trade in products and receive credit toward the purchase of new Cisco equipment.
