Q&A
Q. Does Cisco ® VPN Client v4.x look different from previous versions?
A. Yes. Cisco VPN Client v4.x introduced a new user interface for Windows users and now offers a consistent graphical user interface (GUI) for both Windows and Mac OS X platforms. The main advantages of the version 4.x interface include integration of three separate components (Client GUI, Log Viewer, and Certificate Manager) into one application, and introduction of two modes of operation for the Cisco VPN Client (simple and advanced mode). Simple mode gives your general user community a simplified interface for establishing a connection.
Q. Can I use NetMeeting and other H.323 applications or internal instant-messaging applications with Cisco VPN Client v4.x?
A. Yes. Cisco VPN Client v4.x introduced a VPN Interface Adapter (virtual adapter) for Windows 2000 and XP, which allows these and other applications that may not have operated previously, to now operate properly.
Q. Is Cisco VPN Client v4.x digitally signed by Microsoft?
A. Yes. The current 4.x releases are digitally signed by Microsoft.
Q. Am I able to enforce my Network Admission Control (NAC) policy for VPN users?
A. Yes. NAC enforcement can be used in conjunction with the Cisco VPN Client.
Q. What new features did Cisco VPN Client v4.0 add for wireless auto-initiation?
A. There is now an exception list for wireless auto-initiation. This allows a VPN client to automatically connect except when a user is on one of the specifically defined networks.
Q. How has split tunneling been enhanced in Cisco VPN Client v4.x?
A. Split tunneling will no longer open up an IP Security (IPSec) security association pair for each network reachable from the VPN client. This allows for fewer resources to be used on the headend device.
Q. What operating system versions are supported by the latest Cisco VPN Client version?
A. The latest Cisco VPN Client version provides support for Windows 2000 and XP, Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4, and Linux Intel. Limited support is available for Windows 98. Windows NT and earlier operating systems require use of older versions of Cisco VPN Client.
Q. Will Cisco VPN Client v4.x coexist with another installed VPN client?
A. Cisco VPN Client v4.x has introduced some architectural changes that allow it to coexist more easily with other VPN clients on the system. System interoperability has been verified with the Microsoft Windows Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) IPSec VPN client and the Nortel VPN client. Other VPN clients may now coexist, but would not be formally supported by Cisco.
Q. How do I access information regarding the Cisco VPN Client API?
A. Examples and documentation pertaining to the API can be found in the Download area for the Cisco VPN Client on Cisco.com.
Q. Can I pass internal Web proxy settings down to remote VPN users?
A. Yes. Cisco VPN Client v4.6 has added support to dynamically push browser proxy settings to remote VPN users.
Q. How do I find out which features are in a particular release?
A. A full set of bug fixes and minor enhancements can be found in the readme.txt file posted with each release.
