Cisco Systems© announces the end-of-sale and end-of life dates for the Cisco© Cisco IDS 4.x Sensor Software. The last day to order the affected product is 28-Jun-2006. Customers with active service contracts will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) until 28-Jun-2011.

Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates for the affected product. Table 2 lists the product part numbers affected by this announcement.
Customers are encouraged to migrate to the IPS Version 5.1 Sensor Software which delivers both promiscuous IDS and inline IDS (IPS) functionality to the Cisco IDS/IPS line of sensors. Information about the IPS Version 5.1 Sensor Software can be found at http://www.cisco.com/go/ips. Customers who have a valid Cisco Services for IPS service contract on the Cisco IDS/IPS line of sensor will be able to upgrade from Cisco IDS Version 4.x to Version 5.1. Customers who do not have a valid Cisco Services for IPS contract on the Cisco IDS/IPS Sensors may purchase IPS Version 5.1 Sensor Software using the following P/N: IPS-SW-U-K9

The last date that Cisco Engineering may release any final software maintenance releases or bug fixes. After this date, Cisco Engineering will no longer develop, repair, maintain, or test the product software.

The last date that Cisco will release signature updates.

End of New Service Attachment Date

For equipment and software that is not covered by a service-and-support contract, this is the last date to order a new service-and-support contract or add the equipment and/or software to an existing service-and-support contract.

End of Service Contract Renewal Date

The last date to extend or renew a service contract for the product.

28-Feb-2011

Last Date of Support

The last date to receive service and support for the product. After this date, all support services for the product are unavailable, and the product becomes obsolete.

PRODUCT MIGRATION OPTIONS

The recommended replacement for the Cisco IDS Version 4.x Sensor Software is the IPS Version 5.1. The Cisco IPS 5.1 sensor software delivers both promiscuous based IDS and inline based IPS functionality to the Cisco IDS/IPS sensors. Version 5.1 also delivers new functionality that is not supported on the version 4.x sensor software train. Such features include, but are not limited to:

• Risk Rating for false alarm reduction

• Meta Event Generator

• Configurable Software Bypass Mechanisms

• Inline-on-a-stick to allow IPS services on multiple VLANs using a single interface on the IPS sensor

• Inline IPS drop Actions

• Dynamic service port shut down response actions

• Rate limiting response action on managed devices (routers and switches)

• Inspection of IPv4 packets encapsulated in IPv6

• Inspection into other forms of encapsulation including GRE, mobile IP in IP tunneling, and MPLS

• Extensions to Network based AV

• Signatures to protect from policy violation in SCADA networks

• VoIP Detection Engine

• Application Firewall/Deep Packet Inspection Engines

• SNMP

• Traffic Normalization

• Etherchannel Load balancing (used with Cisco Catalyst 6500 switch) to scale IPS performance

• Support for standard based SDEE (Security Device Event Exchange) communication protocol

• Enhanced embedded management (IPS Device Manager)

Cisco IPS Sensor Software Version 5.1 will operate only on Cisco IDS/IPS sensors with the following part numbers (and newer): IDS-4210, IDS-4210-K9, IDS-4235-K9, IDS-4250-SX-K9, IDS-4250-TX-K9, IDS-4250-XL-K9, IPS-4240-K9, IPS-4255-K9, NM-CIDS-K9 (promiscuous mode only), and IDSM2.
