Q. What is the Cisco ® Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) Network Module (NME-WAE)?
A. The Cisco WAAS Network Module is the industry's first and only router-integrated application acceleration and WAN optimization solution and is the latest addition to the Cisco Wide Area Application Engine (WAE) platforms that host the Cisco WAAS Software. The Cisco WAAS Network Module integrates with Cisco integrated services routers to give you a unique way to consolidate branch office infrastructure, accelerate application performance over the WAN, optimize WAN usage, and simplify data protection and backup. This network module lowers total cost of ownership (TCO) of branch infrastructure and simplifies deployment and management through physical and logical integration with the Cisco integrated services router.
Q. What are the business benefits of deploying the Cisco WAAS Network Module?
A. Cisco WAAS can help your organization accomplish three primary IT objectives:

• Deliver centralized applications with LAN-like speed to remote users while preserving visibility and branch security

• Consolidate costly branch office servers, storage, and backup infrastructure into data centers while optimizing WAN bandwidth usage

• Maximize regulatory compliance and data protection through consolidation of branch storage, as well as acceleration of branch backup applications

As mentioned previously, the Cisco WAAS Network Module combined with the Cisco integrated services router can significantly lower TCO, dramatically improve application performance, optimize WAN usage, and simplify data protection in an easy-to-deploy package.

Q. What is the new model of the Cisco WAAS Network Module being launched?
A. The Cisco WAAS NME-WAE-522, the latest addition to the network module product line, is architected specifically to run only on Cisco 3800 Series Integrated Services Routers. The Cisco NME-WAE-522 is designed for up to medium and large-sized enterprise branch office environments supporting up to 800 concurrent TCP connections and 8-Mbps optimized WAN throughput and xDSL environments. The network module offers two levels of software capability:

Transport license: The Cisco WAAS Transport license provides the WAN optimization capabilities of Cisco WAAS to help your organization improve performance for centralized applications. The license includes the Cisco WAAS Data Redundancy Elimination (DRE) feature, session-based adaptive Lempel-Ziv (LZ) compression, Cisco WAAS Transport Flow Optimization (TFO), and the ability for the device to be managed centrally.

Enterprise license: The Cisco WAAS Enterprise license provides all the capabilities of the Cisco WAAS Transport license plus application-specific acceleration and server offloading services for the Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol. It also includes Windows printing services, disk encryption, and the TCP Flow Agent for NetQoS integration to help IT organizations consolidate costly remote-office server and storage infrastructure while providing enhanced collaboration and centralized data protection.

The Cisco NME-WAE-522 is therefore ideal for both server consolidation and WAN usage optimization, with its available support of enterprise and transport licenses.

As a comparison, the Cisco NME-WAE-502 targets midsize offices and is also ideal for both server consolidation and WAN usage optimization, with its available support of enterprise and transport licenses.

The Cisco NME-WAE-302 addresses small offices by offering customers a low-cost, high-performance platform for WAN usage optimization, with its support of the transport license only.

Q. Which routers does the Cisco WAAS Network Module run on?
A. The Cisco WAAS NME-WAE-502 and NME-WAE-302 are designed to work with the Cisco 2800 and 3800 Series Integrated Services Routers. The router models include the Cisco 2811, 2821, 2851, 3825, and 3845 Integrated Services Routers. The Cisco WAAS NME-WAE-522 works with the Cisco 3825 and 3845 Integrated Services Routers.
Q. What is the recommended usage comparison among the Cisco NME-WAE-522, NME-WAE-502, and NME-WAE-302?
