PRODUCT SUBSTITUTION

The CPA-900 has NOT been available through Cisco direct or Enterprise VAR channels, but was available through the CiscoPro two-tier distribution channel only. Customers who purchase through the CiscoPro two-tier distribution channel should look at CPA-4500 substitute for the CPA-900. For those customers who want to maintain the direct purchase and support relationship with Cisco, or who are looking for support for more sophisticated routing protocols such as OSPF or larger-scale management applications such as CiscoSecure UNIX and who can use PPP and routing on their remote access units, should look at a CS-4700 substitute for the CPA-900. The CS-4700 is available in T1 and E1 PRI versions with switch support for North America, Europe, and Australia.

Description

CiscoPro 4500 with CPA045P-1T1 (1 T1 PRI) or CPA045P-1B|U (1 E1 PRI)

The CiscoPro CPA4500 is a configurable, modular router that has slots for up to three network processor modules-individual modules that, when installed, are ready for external network connections. Its modular design allows reconfiguration as needs change.

The configuration of the CPA4500 models is optimized for differences in WAN services in North American and international markets. Optional modules support dual Ethernet LANs and synchronous serial, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Basic Rate Interface (BRI), and ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI) wide-area interfaces.

A choice of add-on WAN modules for all CPA4500 products simplifies network growth by supplying additional WAN ports for synchronous serial, LANs, ISDN BRI connections, and ISDN PRI channelized T1 or E1 circuits.

Unlike the CPA-900, the CPA4500 is available with the full suite of Cisco IOS® Software features, including the following features not available on the CPA-900:

• Additional routed protocols including AppleTalk
• More sophisticated routing policies including OSPF, BGP, and IGRP
• Off-server authentication for PPP connections using TACACS, TACACS+, or RADIUS
• IP address negotiation including local IP address pools for IPCP negotiation as well as DHCP Proxy support
• V.120 rate adaption
• Dial callback
• ISDN bandwidth management
• Numerous diagnostic features including syslog and Q.931 ISDN debugging

The Cisco IOS Software currently lacks a few capabilities of the CPA-900, which must be taken into consideration when planning a migration or substitution. These include Combinet Packet Protocol (CPP) support, support for CiscoPro Connection Manager, the ability to route ethernet encapsulated packets bridged by the remote access unit, and the ability to support multiple bridged connections on a single PRI interface, originated in either direction. If any of these features are a significant consideration for your installation, please check recent IOS Product Bulletins to see if they are available yet, as they are all planned enhancements.

Cisco 4700 with NP-CT1 (1 T1 PRI) or NP-CE1 (1 E1 PRI)

Cisco Enterprise configurable router with three slots. A good substitute for the CPA-900 when configured with the NP-CT1 (PRI module for T1), this router will support up to 23 dual-B channel Multilink PPP connections (2 PRI) or up to 12 dual-B channel PPP connections (1 PRI) with MLPPP and payload compression.

Unlike the CPA-900, the Cisco 4700 is available with the full suite of IOS features, including the following features not available on the CPA-900:

• Additional routed protocols including AppleTalk
• More sophisticated routing policies including OSPF, BGP, and IGRP
• Off-server authentication for PPP connections using TACACS, TACACS+, or RADIUS
• IP address negotiation including local IP address pools for IPCP negotiation as well as DHCP Proxy support

CiscoSecure

CiscoSecure is a high-performance, feature-rich server that utilizes the TACACS+ security protocol. CiscoSecure centrally controls access to the network, as well as controlling access to the management of the routers within the network.

Network Access security involves three sets of requirements: authentication, authorization, and accounting, referred to as AAA. CiscoSecure utilizes a central database storing User and Group profiles of authentication and authorization information. Once users are authenticated, they are assigned authorization parameters that determine where they can go in the network, and what they can do. At the same time, accounting information is recorded for future security audits, utilization analysis, or customer billing. Centralized control simplifies management and helps ensure simple, safe, and consistent administration of policies for remote access. CiscoSecure can also give Internet service providers billing, authentication, and access authorization for geographically distributed subscribers. CiscoSecure's features include:

• TACACS+ client/server security protocol with TCP transport for reliable packet delivery
• Encrypts all transactions, including user name, password, authorization level, and activity
• Complete control over AAA
• GUI interface simplifies and speeds user and group profile setup
• Password support that offers Cleartext, DES, S/Key, /etc/passwd file, CHAP, PAP, and ARAP
• Password changes by either the user or security manager
• Automatic refusal of easily guessed passwords
• Programmable password aging with early warning messaging
• Time-of-day and day-of-week access permission for block-out periods
• Explicit start and end account dates
• Authorization services include EXEC, PPP (IP, IPX), SLIP, and ARAP
