The Cisco CWDM Gigabit Interface Converters (GBICs) enable the transport of up to eight Gigabit Ethernet channels over a pair of single-mode fiber. The Cisco CWDM GBIC solution allows for a variety of network configurations, from multichannel point-to-point to hub and meshed-ring configurations. Offered in eight different wavelengths, the CWDM GBICs provide scalable and easy-to-deploy Gigabit Ethernet services and are supported by several Cisco Catalyst switches with GBIC slots. In addition, CWDM GBICs are supported in the GBIC slots on OSMs and the WAN-enabled GBICs slots on the GE-WAN OSM for the Cisco 7600 and Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series.

Other Hardware Supported

Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(13)E1 supports all line cards and hardware previously supported by the Cisco IOS Software on Supervisor Engine 2 with MSFC2 for the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series and Cisco 7600 Series and Supervisor Engine 1A with MSFC or MSFC2 for the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series.

Software Support

Table 2 describes the new software support for Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(13)E1.

Table 2   Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(13)E1 New Software Feature Support

Software Feature   Description
Route Processor Redundancy Plus (RPR+)

RPR+ is a Cisco innovation for high availability. Designed for platforms with dual redundant routing processors, such as dual supervisor engines used in the Cisco Catalyst 6500 and Cisco 7600 Series. One supervisor engine is designated as the active route processor, and the second supervisor engine acts as the standby route processor. When the active route processor fails, RPR+ allows the standby supervisor engine to become active without reloading the line cards in the system.

RPR+ ensures that:

  • The redundant supervisor engine is fully booted and has a parsed configuration
  • The Cisco IOS Software running on the primary supervisor engine is synchronized with the standby supervisor
  • There are no link flaps during failover to the secondary supervisor engine
DSCP-based Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED)

Allows preferential drop treatment between packets with different differentiated services code point (DSCP) values.

Hierarchical Traffic Shaping

Hierarchical Traffic Shaping is a multilevel policy in which the parent class is shaped to an aggregate rate while traffic within the parent class is managed appropriately with other quality-of-service (QoS) features such as Class-Based Weighted Fair Queuing (CBWFQ) and Low Latency Queuing (LLQ).

The initial implementation supports the GE-WAN OSM and Frame Relay encapsulations on the POS OSMs. Support for additional WAN encapsulations and OSMs will be available in future releases.

Bridging of Routed Encapsulations (BRE)

Bridging of Routed Encapsulations (BRE) on the 2-port OC-12/STM-4 ATM OSM enables RFC-1483 routed encapsulated packets to be received and subsequently forwarded as Layer 2 frames. BRE implementation requires purchasing a software license: FR-BRE-7600.

Bridging Control Protocol (BCP)

Bridging Control Protocol (BCP) as implemented on the OC-3, OC-12, and OC-48 POS OSMs enables forwarding of Ethernet frames over SONET networks. BCP provides a high-speed extension of enterprise LAN backbone traffic through a metropolitan-area network (MAN).

RFC1483 Hardware Bridging for Private Virtual Circuits (PVCs) on the FlexWAN Module

RFC 1483 bridging as implemented on the FlexWAN Module with the PA-A3-OC3 ATM port adapter supports point-to-point bridging of Layer 2 PDUs between the ATM interfaces on the Port Adapter/FlexWAN and Ethernet ports. (Other PA-A3 Port Adapters will be supported in a subsequent release.)

RFC 1483 bridging for the FlexWAN Module is supported on AAL5-MUX and AAL5-LLC Sub-network Access Protocol (SNAP) encapsulated PVCs. RFC-1483 bridged PVCs must terminate on the ATM Port Adapter and the traffic forwarded over this bridged connection to the edge must be forwarded through an Ethernet port. QoS can also be applied to these connections.

MPLS Enhancements for OSMs

The following MPLS/VPN enhancements for OSMs have been added:

  • MPLS/VPN support for provider edge to customer edge (PE-CE) links on 1-port CHOC-12/CHSTM-4 OSM to T3/E3 (OSM-1ChOC12/T3-xx)
  • MPLS/VPN support for PE-CE links on 1-port CHOC-48/CHSTM-16 OSM to T3/E3 (OSM-1CHOC48/T3-xx)
  • MPLS/VPN support for provider edge to provider core (PE-P) links on 2-port OC-48/STM-16 POS/Dynamic Packet Transport (DPT) OSM (OSM-2OC48/1DPT-xx) in POS mode (PPP/HDLC encapsulation)
  • MPLS/VPN over Frame Relay encapsulation for OC-3/STM-1 POS, OC-12/STM-4 POS, and OC-48/STM-16 POS OSMs
  • Ethernet over MPLS (EoMPLS) on 2-port OC-48/STM-16 POS/DPT OSM in POS mode
MPLS Enhancements for the FlexWAN Module

MPLS/VPN over a Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol (MLPPP) on the FlexWAN Module

Protocol tunneling over an EoMPLS Tunnel

Support for Layer 2 protocol tunneling over an EoMPLS link using either OSMs or the FlexWAN Module. Allows protocol data units (PDUs) such as Cisco discovery protocol (CDP), spanning tree protocol (STP), and virtual trunk protocol (VTP) to be tunneled through an MPLS network.

Network-Based Application Recognition (NBAR)

NBAR is a classification engine that recognizes many applications, including Web-based and other difficult-to-classify protocols that use dynamic Transmission Control Protocol/User Datagram Protocol (TCP/UDP) port assignments. When an application is recognized and classified by NBAR, a network can invoke services for that specific application. NBAR ensures that network bandwidth is used efficiently by classifying packets and then applying QoS to the classified traffic. NBAR is supported in software on the MSFC2. All ingress and egress traffic is processed in software on ports when NBAR is used. Before this release, NBAR was supported on FlexWAN line cards and associated Port Adapters only.

Internal Virtual LAN (VLAN) Allocation

The new internal VLAN allocation feature simplifies VLAN management by providing greater flexibility in assigning both "internal" and "customer" VLANs. Traditionally, internal VLANs have been allocated for WAN interfaces, routed interfaces, and certain other features starting from VLAN 1006 (by default); when allocated, these internal VLANs are not available for customer VLAN assignment. The new internal VLAN allocation feature allows internal VLAN allocation to be assigned in descending order, beginning with VLAN ID 4096 rather than ascending from VLAN ID 1006. This allows customers to assign VLAN IDs in an ascending fashion without internal VLAN ID restrictions in the middle of the ID range.

WAN Support for NetFlow Data Export (NDE) Enhancements

NDE is used for collecting accounting statistics on IP flow information for routed traffic. NDE makes routed-traffic statistics available for analysis by an external data collector to improve manageability of the network.

The following enhancements have been added to the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series and Cisco 7600 Series NetFlow support:

  • NetFlow Version 5
  • New NDE Fields—Although NetFlow Version 5 and Version 7 records include these fields, they have not been exported in NetFlow records until now
  • New flowmasks—The NetFlow flowmask is used to define a unique IP flow
  • Sampled NetFlow—By default, NetFlow at a xport collects statistics for all traffic that is routed through the device, which can account for a tremendous amount data to analyze. Sampled NetFlow reduces the amount of data sent to an external collector
64-bit SNMP Counters for GE-WAN OSM

Physical and logical interface (subinterface) support for 64-bit Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) counters on the 4-port GE-WAN OSM.
