With the introduction of the Cisco
® ONS 15454 Any Rate Muxponder (AR-MXP) and Any Rate Xponder (AR-XP) line cards, the Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Transport Platform provides unprecedented flexibility for multiservice aggregation, enabling the transport of a large variety of signals and interfaces into enterprises, metropolitan-area (metro) networks, and regional service provider networks.
Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Transport Platform Release
9.4 features the AR-MXP and AR-XP line cards and consists of an 8-port SFP-based muxponder with two XFP ports. The cards support a wide mix of services, such as SONET/SDH (STM-1/OC-3 to STM-16/OC-48), optical transport networks (OTU-1 and OTU-2), Ethernet, ESCON, Fibre Channel/FICON (1G to 8G), and video (SD-SDI , HD-SDI ,and 3G-SDI).
These cards are able to aggregate any combination of services on client SFPs into an OTU-2 trunk interface and can support several optical protection schemes. The main difference between the AR-MXP and AR-XP cards is the supported bandwidth (20 Gbps vs. 40 Gbps, respectively).
The AR-MXP and AR-XP cards are equipped with pluggables for client and trunk options and offer a variety of different configurations. They can operate as 2.5-Gbps transponders, both protected and unprotected, providing client SFP mapping onto the OTU-1 trunk DWDM SFP, and also as 2.5-Gbps muxponders, both protected and unprotected, mapping multiple client SFPs onto the OTU-1 trunk DWDM SFP. The cards can also operate as 10-Gbps transponders, muxponders, and data muxponders, both protected and unprotected (based on the specific configuration), mapping different client signals onto the OTU-2 trunk XFP.
The cards can support any mix of client to trunk aggregation, including 2.5-Gbps muxponders, 10-Gbps muxponders, or 2.5-Gbps transponders.

Data Center Interconnect
The Cisco ONS 15454 Any Rate Line Cards address demands for high-density data and storage service aggregation. Whether a customer is using a dedicated enterprise infrastructure or a metro or regional service provider network, they can efficiently and cost-effectively scale their business continuance applications and consolidate their backbone network infrastructures.
The tremendous growth of business applications is heightening data storage requirements and network expectations. Customers demand uninterrupted access to corporate systems and data. Enterprises must respond to this surge in demand by providing robust, highly secure, interconnected SANs and geographically dispersed data-recovery solutions. The Cisco ONS 15454 Any Rate Line Cards provide the capability to efficiently aggregate mission-critical Gigabit Ethernet, ESCON, Fibre Channel (up to 8G FC), and FICON services across the metro optical transport network, enabling real-time synchronous replication of information between the primary and backup data centers.

The AR-MXP and AR-XP cards provide tremendous density (up to 4x4 GFC in one slot) as well as flexibility (any mix of 1G, 2G, 4G, and 8G FC) to efficiently support Data Center Interconnect.
Managed Service Network and OTU-1 Handoff
The DWDM transport network offers a basic transport layer to service providers. The capability of the managed service network to optimize wavelength efficiency is key to providing service providers with a significant return on investment.
Optical transport networks are becoming the standard for interconnecting network interfaces of different DWDM network providers. OTNs guarantee total transparency of the wrapped payload as well a defined standard for the interfaces.

The AR-MXP and AR-XP cards provide a dense (up 4 x Any Rate TXP in a single slot), flexible (any mix of TDM, SAN, Ethernet, video transparently muxed), and intelligent (automatic detection of the incoming SONET/SDH or GE signals) solution to network applications.
The ability of the Cisco ONS 15454 AR-MXP and AR-XP cards to multiplex any mix of services (Ethernet, SONET, SDH, OTN, SAN, or video) allows optimization of the number of wavelengths used in the network, allowing a huge CAPEX reduction of the transport infrastructure and enabling an efficient managed service network. In addition, the AR-MXP and AR-XP cards provide fully standards-based OTU-1 and OTU-2 interfaces, allowing service providers to hand off services to other service providers with full service-layer agreement support.
HD Video Aggregation
Video signals are becoming increasingly popular with service providers. The requirement is not only to deploy a Layer 2 or Layer 3 network dedicated to video applications, but also to natively support such services over a DWDM system. Stringent latency requirements and the capability to transmit signal without compression is becoming a requirement for DWDM networks.

OTU-2 EFEC Regenerator/Translator
There are multiple enhanced forward error correction (EFEC) algorithms in the market, but most deployments use
975.1 I-4 and I-7 options. The different coding mechanisms create interoperability issues between equipment. Cisco ONS 15454 Any Rate Line Cards are able to regenerate OTN signals with different EFEC algorithms, connecting equipment that could previously not be connected; for example, regeneration of OTU-2 signals coming from a Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System that need to be terminated over a Cisco 7600 Series Router or Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router.
