The Cisco ONS 15216 Optical Supervisory Channel (OSC) Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OADM) is a passive device used for combining and separating a wavelength operating at 1510 nm from a composite dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) signal, while allowing other wavelengths to pass through.

Applications

Optical supervisory channels are used in DWDM systems for management communication between adjacent network elements, and typically operate at a wavelength of 1510 nm.  While the function of combining and separating the OSC from the composite DWDM signal is often integrated into other DWDM components, such as an amplifier or reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM), those components are not always present.  The Cisco ONS 15216 Optical Supervisory Channel OADM can be used in these circumstances, particularly when a DWDM network operates over a passive optical layer, as shown in Figure 2.

Edge Mounting Bracket

The Cisco ONS 15216 Optical Supervisory Channel OADM occupies one position of the Cisco ONS 15216 Edge Mounting Bracket (Figure 3). The mounting bracket occupies one rack unit (1RU) and mounts into a standard 19‑inch rack. It has four positions for mounting OADMs.
