Cisco announces Cisco IOS® Software updates for Cisco® Catalyst® 3750 Metro Series Switches and Cisco ME 3400 and ME 3400E Series Ethernet Access Switches. This release advances Cisco's leadership role by providing support for drop eligibility indicator (DEI)-based quality of service (QoS) and split horizon in IEEE 802.1ad provider bridges frames on the ME 3400E Series, Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) over switch virtual interface (SVI), and flexible maximum transmission unit (MTU) size per interface for Metro Ethernet deployments.

This product bulletin contains content and delivery information for Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(55)SE.

New Features

The following new features are available with Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(55)SE for Metro Ethernet switches:

DEI-based QoS for 802.1ad provider bridges frames: Supports classification, marking, and policing of 8021.ad frames based on DEI bit.

Split horizon for IEEE802.1ad: Prevents mixing of traffic from different customers on a single Customer Edge (CE) devices.

BFD over SVI: Allows fast Provider Edge (PE) device failure detection and switchover to redundant PE devices when switches are deployed as Layer 3 Customer Premises Equipment (CPE).

Flexible MTU size per interface: Allows service providers to set the MTU on a per port basis.

Because of export restrictions on strong cryptography software, a separate image is required for the cryptographic features (Secure Shell [SSH] Protocol, Simple Network Management Protocol Version 3 [SNMPv3], and Kerberos Protocol). These software images can be downloaded from the corresponding Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES) area of the links provided in this section. Note that the Cisco Advanced IP Services license is available only in cryptographic format.
