END-OF-LIFE NOTICE, NO. 675
INTRODUCTION
This Product Bulletin announces the End of Software Support for first-generation Versatile Interface Processors (VIPs) effective in Cisco
® IOS
® Software Release 11.3. See Table 1 for a list of affected model numbers.
Cisco IOS releases after Cisco IOS Release 11.2 and 11.2P will no longer support VIP1 products. Maintenance support and duration will be tied to Cisco IOS 11.2 End-of-Sale (EoS) and End-of-Engineering (EoE) schedules. This bulletin does not announce the EoS of Cisco IOS Release 11.2. It is provided solely for the purpose of long-range planning for those customers currently using VIP1 products.
RATIONALE
VIP1 products entered EoS on October 1, 1996. The second-generation Versatile Interface Processor (VIP2) provides superior performance, advanced services, and flexible port adapter configurations at comparable prices to the original VIP1 family. In effect, VIP2 is a direct replacement for VIP1. When EoS was announced for VIP1, an aggressive VIP1-to-VIP2 upgrade campaign was made available to provide 1-for-1 replacement without charge. This program is still available for any existing VIP1 user and can be found in the Cisco 7000 and Investment Protection areas of the ISP-BU Website on CEC.
Cisco 7000/7010 customers not wishing to upgrade to the RSP7000 may keep the VIP1 in service since the VIP2 is not supported in RP/SP systems. With only RP/SP customers requiring support for VIP1 in the future, VIP1 support will end in conjunction with the End of Software Support for the Cisco 7000/7010 RP/SP systems which is Cisco IOS Release 11.2 mainline. See Product Bulletin 615, "Cisco 7000/7010 End-of-Sales Announcement," for more information on Cisco 7000/7010 End-of-Sale.
Customers of VIP1 on Cisco 7500 Series routers may continue to use Cisco IOS Release 11.2 or 11.2P.
