The Cisco WebEx Node for MCS is a software component that is deployed with Cisco Unified MeetingPlace 8.0 to provide on-premises data options and improved performance for Cisco WebEx meetings.

Cisco Unified MeetingPlace conferencing is integrated with multiple applications and devices to enable you to better integrate conferencing into your business processes. Advanced Audio and Video Conferencing

The Cisco Unified MeetingPlace solution is the industry-leading on-premises audio conferencing solution. Users can connect to meetings from their desktop, PC-based, or mobile phones. User- and moderator-controlled functions, such as muting phones and private breakout discussions, help provide effective virtual meetings. The solution provides enhanced voice quality over any network with wideband audio and low-bit-rate codecs.

Cisco Unified MeetingPlace conferencing provides a fully integrated audio and video architecture that results in an effective and easy-to-use video experience. The solution supports a wide range of video standards, codecs, and video resolutions to help ensure broad endpoint connectivity. You can dial a single number to attend a meeting and the system connects you to audio or video resources based on the capabilities of your endpoint. The system also knows your phone number and can automatically connect you to your meeting when you dial in from a recognized phone or client. Simplifying and automating attendance means that meetings start on time and frequent conferencing frustrations are eliminated.

Two audio and video deployment models are supported. You can deploy the audio and video application software and media server on a on a single media convergence server (MCS) or you can deploy application software on an MCS and use the Cisco Unified MeetingPlace 3515 or MeetingPlace 3545 Media Server. The hardware media servers provide greater scalability and more advanced video capabilities, such as continuous presence, video transcoding, and connection-speed transrating. The single-MCS deployment option provides basic video switching capabilities where only the active speaker can be seen.

Cisco WebEx Integration with Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Conferencing

Cisco Unified MeetingPlace 8.0 can be deployed as a standalone audio and video solution or it can be integrated with Cisco WebEx meeting applications. The solution components are tightly integrated so users experience the simplicity of having a single point of setup, attendance, and meeting control across audio, video, and web conferencing. The solution provides the flexibility to set up and attend conferences from Cisco Unified MeetingPlace or Cisco WebEx user interfaces. Authentication is simplified with single sign-on across the solutions. From the Cisco WebEx meeting interface you can dial out to your phones to attend, see who is speaking, and access voice controls, such as muting participants and locking the meeting (Figure 1).

The Cisco WebEx Node for MCS is a software component that is deployed on-premises with Cisco Unified MeetingPlace 8.0. The WebEx Node for MCS extends the Cisco WebEx Collaboration Cloud into an organization's onsite network infrastructure. This deployment option allows for internal web conferencing traffic to be routed to the Cisco WebEx Node for MCS and remain in-house, helping reduce the load traversing the proxy server or firewall infrastructure and improving performance by reducing traffic latency.

Internal meeting participants connect to the local Cisco WebEx Node for MCS, which generates a single data stream to the Cisco WebEx Collaboration Cloud. External attendees connect directly to the Cisco WebEx Collaboration Cloud. The Cisco WebEx Node for MCS also enables internal-only meetings where web conferencing traffic and recordings stay on-premises.

Cisco Unified MeetingPlace and the Cisco WebEx Node for MCS lets organizations combine the cost-savings advantages of on-premises audio conferencing, the productivity benefits of Cisco WebEx web conferencing, and the data performance and security benefits of an onsite platform.

Impromptu, Multiparty Conferencing for Cisco Unified Communications

Cisco Unified MeetingPlace 8.0 can be used with Cisco Unified Communications client solutions, including Cisco Unified Personal Communicator, Cisco UC Integration for Microsoft Office Communicator, Cisco UC Integration for Cisco WebEx Connect, and Cisco Unified IP Phones 9900 Series to let users quickly initiate multiparty audio, video, and Cisco WebEx web conferences. Combining presence, instant messaging, IP telephony, unified messaging, and rich-media conferencing helps virtual teams and organizations more effectively collaborate, innovate, and make decisions.

Rich-Media Conference Recordings

Cisco Unified MeetingPlace conferencing supports audio and video conference recording using Cisco WebEx (.arf) formatted files that you can download and edit with Cisco WebEx Recording Tools. Audio-only recordings are available in multiple formats, including Waveform Audio (WAV), MPEG Layer 3 (MP3), and Windows Media with Cisco MeetingPlace Scheduling Model. With Cisco MeetingPlace Scheduling Model you can play back or download audio and video recordings using MPEG-4 format. When integrated with Cisco WebEx meetings, you can create, store, download, edit, and play back synchronized audio and web recordings for Cisco WebEx Meeting Center, Event Center, and Training Center meetings.

Enterprise-Scale Conferencing Solution

Cisco Unified MeetingPlace conferencing provides deployment options to meet the needs of midsize to very large organizations. The solution has many proven global deployments in Fortune 500 companies. The solution delivers the scalability, reliability, simplified administration, security, and cost-effectiveness that IT organizations require. For midsize organizations, Cisco Unified MeetingPlace conferencing offers a software solution that is installed on a single MCS. The solution also integrates with the Cisco Unified Communications Manager directory to simplify profile management by automating user authentication and profile setup. Web-based administration capabilities include report generation, conference monitoring, diagnostics, and interface configuration. The Cisco Unified MeetingPlace solution also integrates with the Cisco WebEx solution with both automatic profile management and end-user authentication (on-premises).

Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Media Servers

Cisco Unified MeetingPlace 8.0 offers a new option for audio and video processing. The Cisco Unified MeetingPlace 8.0 Express Media Server provides a completely software-based solution that is co-resident with the application on a standard MCS. The capacity of the server depends on the codecs that are used as well as the video resolutions. Table 1 lists the capacities of the servers.

To provide greater scalability and enhanced audio and video capabilities, Cisco Unified MeetingPlace 8.0 also offers the Cisco Unified MeetingPlace 3500 Series Media Servers (Figure 2).

Cisco Unified MeetingPlace System Specifications

System Capacity

A Cisco Unified MeetingPlace system can scale to 2000 concurrent audio, 1000 web, and 300 video users in any combination. A single large meeting can support up to 1000 audio, 500 web, and 240 video participants. You can deploy multiple Cisco Unified MeetingPlace 3545 or MeetingPlace 3515 chassis in a single system as long as the total number of ports does not exceed the system limits listed in Table 5.

Cisco Unified MeetingPlace 8.0 with the Cisco WebEx Node for MCS can support up to 1000 concurrent web conferencing users with up to three Cisco MCS servers in a distributed, load-sharing model. The capacities of each of the supported MCSs are listed in Table 5.

Cisco WebEx Node for MCS capacities

Each Cisco MCS 7835 I3-RC1 can have 250 on-premises Cisco WebEx ports and each Cisco MCS 7845 I3-RC2 can have 500 on-premises Cisco WebEx ports.
The maximum number of nodes for capacity scaling and redundancy for active web conferences is three.

Recording

You can edit Cisco WebEx audio and web (.arf) recordings with the Cisco WebEx Recording Editor.
The Cisco MeetingPlace Scheduling Model supports internal Cisco WebEx (.arf) recordings stored on premises. External recordings are stored in the Cisco WebEx Cloud.
The Cisco WebEx Scheduling Model supports external meeting (.arf) recordings in Cisco WebEx Collaboration Cloud.
Audio and video recording or audio and web recordings are available.
Audio-only recording is available in MP3, WAV, and Windows Media on the Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Scheduling Model only.
Synchronized audio and video recording is available in MPEG4, playable through Apple QuickTime; the maximum recording period is 6 hours. (This feature is not available with Express Media Server with Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Scheduling Model.)

You can initiate and control Cisco Unified MeetingPlace voice conferences from a Cisco WebEx Meeting Center, Event Center, or Training Center or a Lotus Sametime Web conference.

Video Conferencing: Cisco Unified MeetingPlace 3500 Media Servers

Video encoding standards include H.261, H.263, and H.264 with continuous-presence formats.

Live video resolutions follow: Quarter Common Intermediate Format (QCIF), Common Intermediate Format (CIF), and Standard Input Format (SIF); 4CIF is supported with H.263 in high-rate mode.

For video the solution offers up to 2 Mbps of bandwidth per port with full transcoding and transrating for all SD video codecs and speeds on all ports.

Continuous presence layouts are supported with up to 16 participants.

A text overlay allows for user identification.

The solution supports quality of service (QoS) with Differentiated Services (DiffServ).

At the start of a meeting, all invited video terminals can be automatically out-dialed (Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Scheduling deployment).

Integration with the Microsoft Outlook scheduling function allows for video terminals to be scheduled through Microsoft Exchange (Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Scheduling deployment)

Video Conferencing: Express Media Server

Live video resolutions follow: Common Intermediate Format (CIF) and 720p high definition for Cisco Services Framework (CSF) HD devices.

Video automatically connects with video-enabled endpoints; no scheduling is required.

A text overlay allows for user identification.

The solution supports QoS with DiffServ.

At the start of a meeting, all invited video terminals can be automatically out-dialed (Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Scheduling deployment).

You can search for and check availability of video terminals at the scheduled time (Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Scheduling deployment).

Meeting Setup and Attendance

You can schedule or initiate immediate voice, video, and web conferences through a Cisco WebEx Productivity Tools or Cisco Unified MeetingPlace web interface, touch-tone or Cisco Unified IP Phone, Microsoft Outlook or IBM Lotus Notes calendar, or IBM Sametime Connect IM.

Calendar or email invitations are automatically distributed to invited participants with the information needed to attend the integrated rich-media conference.

With a single click you can attend voice, video, and web conferences directly from your calendar, email notification, URL link, IM, or browser.

You can initiate immediate meetings from Cisco Unified Personal Communicator, Sametime Connect, Jabber Messenger, and Microsoft Office Communicator with Live Communications Server.

Security

Each customer is provided with a dedicated Cisco Unified MeetingPlace solution integrated with the private network.

You can set up meetings as internal-only meetings to be held entirely behind the corporate firewall or as external meetings that are accessible to Internet and internal participants. Administrators and meeting organizers have complete control.

Meeting organizers can require that participants authenticate themselves using individual logins to attend a meeting or to access the documents and recordings for a meeting. In addition, the Cisco Unified MeetingPlace system can automatically block out users after multiple failed login attempts.

The solution offers a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) Version 3 directory interface to selected vendors' LDAP directories: Active Directory and Netscape Directory Server through Cisco Unified Communications Manager (included in application software).

Cisco Unified MeetingPlace conferencing supports encrypted webpages and web conferencing traffic using SSL.

Meeting organizers can change voice and web conferencing permissions, specify announced entry and departure, require passwords, lock the meeting, and eject unwanted attendees.

System Administration

The solution provides web-based Cisco Multimedia Conference Manager with drag-and-drop capabilities for meeting moderation and monitoring across multiple deployment clusters.

You can customize voice prompts (including music on hold), and you can customize or hide web scheduling fields and Outlook integration scheduling fields.

The standard configuration provides use (voice, video, and web) and billing reports. Detailed raw data reports to track meeting and participant details are available.

Remote management and monitoring are performed using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) traps; alarms out-dial to a phone or pager.

Hot failover for audio and video media blades is supported, as well as a redundant application server for warm database failover.

Cisco Unified MeetingPlace conferencing provides a Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP)-based application programming interface (API) for external application integrations. It supports user provisioning, user authorization, system configuration, licensing, schedule, start, attend, end meetings, in-session controls, and events.
