CiscoWorks LAN Management Solution (LMS) is an integrated suite of management functions that simplify the configuration, administration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of Cisco® networks. CiscoWorks LMS allows network operators to manage the network through a browser-based interface that can be accessed anytime from anywhere within the network. CiscoWorks LMS 4.0 is a major new release that improves the overall user experience, providing new workflows built on functional partitioning that aligns the product with the way network operators do their jobs. Once installed, "out-of-the-box" monitoring and troubleshooting dashboards provide actionable information to quickly isolate and fix network problems before they impact services. Configuring and deploying updates to the network has never been easier with the new Template Center, which incorporates Cisco Validated Designs and links to download the latest configuration templates from Cisco.com simplifying platform and technology rollout and reducing the chance for errors. New "Work Centers" provide a single area where guided workflows give step-by-step instructions to help operators quickly provision, monitor, and manage new Cisco value-added technologies and solutions, such as EnergyWise, TrustSec/Identity, Auto Smartports, and Smart Install.

New Features

CiscoWorks LMS 4.0 is a new management paradigm, focused on a new user experience that promotes real-time actionable information with an intuitive set of predefined dashboards. In addition to the portlets and functionality delivered in previous versions of LMS, significant new enhancements and features are being delivered in the LMS 4.0 release. A summary of the new functional areas can be found in Table 1. For detailed information on the features of CiscoWorks LMS 4.0, please refer to the product data sheet and the "Getting Started" section of the LMS 4.0 user documentation, which can be found at http://www.cisco.com/go/lms.

Table 1. CiscoWorks LAN Management Solution 4.0 New Functional Areas

Functional Area

Description

Monitoring and Troubleshooting

Quickly and proactively identify and fix network problems before they affect end users or service (question; I'd prefer to use the word impact rather than affect. Impact has a stronger connotation wrt manageability.

• Centralized fault and event (consolidated, syslog, traps, and events and alarms).
• Quick navigation to and "hover-over" to identify problem areas.
• Embedded troubleshooting workflow for quick problem isolation and remediation.
• Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)-based polling to identify availability and performance issues.
• Integration with Cisco Network Analysis Module (NAM) for detailed performance analysis and troubleshooting (packet-level decode, protocol analysis, top talkers, and so on).

Configuration Management

Configuration backup, software image management, compliance, change management required to maintain and update network devices

• Cisco best practices configuration templates - deploy full or partial configurations based on Cisco validated design recommendations.
• Dynamic guided workflows reduce chance for errors.
• Extensible configuration library, new updates, and configuration templates can easily be downloaded from Cisco.com.
• Integration with Cisco Configuration Professional assists with deployment of multidevice Cisco Configuration Professional-generated configuration files, makes use of LMS configuration templates and scheduler.

Inventory

Complete and thorough inventory of all Cisco equipment details - chassis, module, interface.

• Provides a single menu for discovery status, device status, user tracking, and inventory dashboards.
• Support for more than 560 Cisco device types.
• Day-one device support allows new device packages to be downloaded the day the platform ships.

Reporting

All reports are centralized in a single menu simplifying navigation and access to detailed reports and information

• Inventory, end-of-sale, Cisco Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT), configuration and compliance, user tracking, and all other CiscoWorks reports are represented in a consolidated menu.
• Reports can be easily scheduled to run immediately or daily, weekly, or monthly and can be viewed online or optionally exported to a file or comma-separated value (CSV) file (CSV).

Work Centers

End-to-end "lifecycle" management of Cisco value-added technologies - deployment, monitoring, and management of EnergyWise, TrustSec/Identity, Auto Smartports, Smart Install.

• Getting started workflows provide simplified configuration and setup of infrastructure for supporting Cisco technologies.
• Dashboards provide up-to-date status on configuration, inventory, and monitoring for troubleshooting purposes.

Administration

Getting started and improved workflows simplify application setup and administration.

• All administrative functions for setting up and configuring the application are centralized for easier access.

New Product Structure

CiscoWorks LMS 4.0 is now a single integrated application. The traditional applications, Resource Manager Essentials, Campus Manager, Device Fault Manager, Internet Performance Monitor, and Health and Utilization Manager have been integrated into monitoring, configuration, inventory, reporting, work centers, and administration functional areas, aligning the overall user experience with the way network operators manage networks. CiscoWorks LMS uses a size-based licensing model where pricing is based upon the total number of managed devices. Three new part numbers are being introduced to provide better linearity in the size-based licensing model.
These include a new Small Business Edition (CWLMS-4.0-SBE) for 50 or fewer devices, as well as support for 750 or fewer and 2500 or fewer devices. In addition, optional remote monitoring and collector licenses will be available in three sizes for distributing polling and collection functionality to help improve overall application performance and scalability.

Product Upgrades and Data Migration

Upgrades are available for existing 2.x and 3.x LMS customers at a substantial discount to help protect prior investment made in CiscoWorks LMS. Data migration is supported only for customers on LMS 2.6 and LMS 3.0 or later releases.

Product Availability and Updates

Cisco Works LMS 4.0 will be available for ordering on September 13 th, 2010 and will be shipping (First Customer Ship [FCS]) on September 22 nd, 2010. CiscoWorks LMS 4.0 is a major product release and is not covered under existing Software Application and Support (SAS) contracts. Customers who wish to move to the LMS 4.0 release will need to purchase one of the upgrade part numbers listed in Table 2. Upgrades are available for existing CiscoWorks LMS 2.x and 3.x customers.
End of Sale is being announced for the LMS 3.2 product in conjunction with the availability of LMS 4.0. The LMS 3.2 product will continue to be sold for a minimum of six months as per Cisco policy. For more information refer to the CiscoWorks LMS 3.2 end-of-sales announcement.

Ordering Information

CiscoWorks LMS 4.0 is based on a size-based licensing model. Whether you have 50 or 10,000 Cisco devices, ordering CiscoWorks LMS 4.0 to fit your network requirements is easy and simple. Order the appropriate part number from Table 2 based on the number of Cisco devices to be managed. Device licenses are not additive; a set of optional conversion part numbers are available electronically to help move from one size to the next (see Table 3).
CiscoWorks LMS is available as physical media or is electronically downloadable from http://www.cisco.com/go/nmsevals. If the product is downloaded, an evaluation license is installed by default entitling the user to 90 days of use for 100 devices until the purchased license (Product Activation Key [PAK]) is applied. Electronic licenses are designated with a prefix of L, and the part numbers are listed in Table 3.
