Q. What is CiscoWorks LAN Management Solution (LMS)?
A. CiscoWorks LMS is an integrated suite of applications for administrating, monitoring, and troubleshooting Cisco ® networks. It provides IT organizations the solid foundation of infrastructure-management capabilities that is needed to efficiently manage business-critical networks.
Q. Which applications are in CiscoWorks LMS 3.0?
A. CiscoWorks LMS 3.0 contains the following applications:

• CiscoWorks Campus Manager is a suite of Web-based applications designed for managing networks powered by Cisco switches. These include Layer 2 device and connectivity discovery, workflow application-server discovery and management, detailed topology views, virtual LAN/LAN Emulation (VLAN/LANE) and ATM configuration, end-station tracking, Layer 2 and 3 path-analysis tools, and IP phone user and path information.

• CiscoWorks Device Fault Manager provides real-time fault analysis for Cisco devices. It generates "intelligent Cisco traps" through a variety of data collection and analysis techniques. These can be locally displayed, e-mailed, or forwarded to other popular event-management systems.

• CiscoWorks Internetwork Performance Monitor is a network response-time and availability troubleshooting application. This tool empowers network engineers to proactively troubleshoot network performance using real-time and historical reports.

• CiscoWorks Resource Manager Essentials provides the tools needed to manage Cisco devices. It includes inventory and device change management, network-configuration and software-image management, network availability, and syslog analysis.

• CiscoWorks CiscoView is a Web-based tool that graphically provides real-time status of Cisco devices. The tool can display detailed monitoring information on interfaces and access configuration functions.

• CiscoWorks Common Services provides common management desktop services and security across CiscoWorks solutions. It also provides CiscoWorks LMS Portal, a new homepage and portal framework that can be customized to meet your individual management needs, and CiscoWorks Assistant, a new workflow engine for quick troubleshooting of network problems.

• Cisco device discovery

• Layer 2 and Layer 3 topology and connection-path trace

• Historical change and syslog auditing

• Extensive inventory tracking, end-of-sale, end-of-life, and Product Security Incident Report Team (PSIRT) reporting

• Improved scalability

• Support for end-of-sale, end-of-life, and PSIRT reporting as well as new best practices reports

Q. Can data be upgraded from earlier CiscoWorks LMS versions to CiscoWorks LMS 3.0?
A. Yes, in-place and remote data upgrades are supported from CiscoWorks LMS 2.2, 2.5, and 2.6.

Installation and Compatibility

Q. What platforms support CiscoWorks LMS?
A. CiscoWorks LMS can be installed on select Windows and Solaris operating systems and versions.
Q. Can all the applications within CiscoWorks LMS 3.0 be loaded on a single server?
A. Yes, but for performance and scalability reasons, it is recommended that you distribute the applications onto multiple server instances, especially in networks with more than 3,000 devices. Please refer to CiscoWorks deployment guides for more information.
Q. What are the system requirements for CiscoWorks LMS 3.0?
A. Tables 1 and 2 list the CiscoWorks LMS 3.0 system requirements for server and client installations.

Q. How do I order CiscoWorks LMS?
A. CiscoWorks LAN Management Solution is available for purchase through regular Cisco sales and distribution channels worldwide. To place an order, visit the Cisco Ordering Homepage.
Q. How is CiscoWorks LMS 3.0 licensed?
A. CiscoWorks LMS is sold based on device counts. A device is represented as an IP address or hostname. There are SKUs for 100, 300, 1500, 5000, and 10,000 devices.
Q. Are device counts additive?
A. No, device counts are not cumulative per server. If you purchase a 100-device SKU and an additional 100-device SKU, you do not get 200 managed devices on the same server. If you have 100 devices and now want to manage 200 devices, you would need to order the 300-device support SKU.
Q. What is the maximum number of devices that can be managed from a single server with all CiscoWorks LMS 3.0 applications installed?
A. Cisco has certified and tested 3000 total devices with all applications installed on a single server instance.
Q. Are software-support contracts available, and how are they ordered?
A. Yes, you can purchase a 1-year Software Application Support (SAS) contract that provides Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) support, access to software maintenance patches on Cisco.com Software Center, and CiscoWorks LMS minor update releases.
Q. Can individual applications within CiscoWorks LMS be purchased?
A. No, these CiscoWorks LMS applications are sold only as a bundled solution.
Q. Does the CiscoWorks LMS 2.x SAS provide upgrade entitlement to the CiscoWorks LMS 3.0 release?
A. No, SAS does not cover entitlement between CiscoWorks LMS 2.x and this new major software revision.
