Cisco Acquires Memoir Systems

Leader in memory IP will increase ASIC chip speed while shrinking chip size.

Memoir Systems

Cisco has acquired Memoir Systems, a leading provider of memory intellectual property (IP) licenses for use in Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chips.

Memoir develops memory intellectual property (IP) that increases the performance and reduces the area of standard memory in ASICs. By adding Memoir technology to Cisco's future ASICs, Cisco is able to extend its ASIC differentiation since standard memory access can be accelerated up to 10x; and the technology can also reduce the overall footprint that this memory takes up in a typical ASIC. This advantage becomes critically important as port densities increase and port speeds move from 10G to 40/100G.

Memoir's technology and talent can be used across the entirety of Cisco's future ASIC projects as every advanced chip uses on-chip memory, and these memory blocks take an increasingly large portion of the overall ASIC. The reduced footprint and increased performance that can be achieved through using Memoir technology allow Cisco to continue to innovate at the chip level and tie these innovations to the system requirements of our customers.

Q: Who is Memoir Systems?
A: Memoir is a privately held company, founded in 2009, with headquarters in Santa Clara, CA and offices in Hyderabad, India and Yerevan, Armenia.
Q: How does Memoir Systems complement Cisco's ASIC strategy?
A: Memoir Systems develops memory intellectual property (IP) that increases the performance and reduces the area of standard memory in ASICs. By adding Memoir Systems technology to Cisco's future ASICs, Cisco is able to extend its ASIC differentiation since standard memory access can be accelerated up to 10x in a typical ASIC. This advantage becomes critically important as port densities increase and port speeds move from 10G to 40/100G.
Q: What is Memoir Systems' product?
A: Memoir Systems currently licenses intellectual property / software to several companies, including Cisco, to speed up memory access and reduce the overall footprint that memory takes up in switch ASICs.
Q: How does the acquisition of Memoir Systems benefit Cisco?
A: Memoir Systems' technology and talent can be used across the entirety of Cisco's future ASIC projects as every advanced chip uses on-chip memory, and these memory blocks take an increasingly large portion of the overall ASIC. The reduced footprint and increased performance achieved through Memoir Systems' technology will allow Cisco to continue to innovate at the chip level and provide these innovations to meet the system requirements of our customers.
Q: Why did Cisco choose Memoir Systems?
A: Memoir Systems is a leader in developing memory IP that takes standard ASIC memory and then modifies it to produce differentiation in performance and cost. Its technology has been extremely effective in the products where it's currently used, and this acquisition will enable Cisco to provide affordable, increased memory speeds in additional products. Further, the design and development talent at Memoir Systems are highly skilled, and in joining Cisco will keep Cisco at the forefront of innovation in this area.
